German Shepherd Dog Food ??
« on: February 18, 2010, 05:06:13 PM »
Hey Everyone,

Just out of curiousity (and this is good information to know) ... What brand of dog food do you feed your German Shepherd ?

It would be interesting for everyone to share the following:
1.) Brand of food
2.) Why that particular brand
3.) Age of German Shepherd
4.) Frequency of feeding (once a day, twice a day, three times a day, etc .....)

Look forward to everyone sharing this information.

Thanks,
D

We feed Royal Canin Large Breed- all four dogs do well on it and the kibble size is small enough for tracking, as compared to the Royal Canin German Shepherd food.    8)

Preface - I'll find a more positive Username. Am not feeling particularly cre8ive so used the first thing that came to mind.

Disclaimer - I promise not to be a raw-feeding rabble-rouser here, not to criticise others' feeding choices, to do my best to just answer questions.

1) raw prey model, often actual nearly-full (=drained, gutted) raw prey

2) at the risk of sounding polemical ...
  • fresh-smelling breath, excellent gum health, glossy coat, super jaw & neck work-out, nearly non-existent vet bills, firm stools, greatly reduced stool mass, lowered risk of bloat
  • best value money-wise in my case, since I have a good range of fairly convenient hunting, butcher, coop etc contacts and room for two chest freezers
  • time-, brainpower- and effort-efficient: I don't have to worry about ingredients changing, shop for food, remember to buy it, then haul bags of kibble
  • my son is being raised with a more a realistic idea of where food comes from

3) 2.5 years

4) daily

Now, to show I can play nicely with those who choose to feed commercial foods:

That's a great website you shared...thanks :)  I thought about doing the raw diet for my shepherd but haven't taken the plunge yet. I don't know why, but i'm a little nervous about the raw stuff.

I fed my bouv raw for the first 6 months affter I got her and felt good about it.  However, it became too much work and after I started substituting too often, and then gave it up completely.   :-\

We feed our Shepherd Orijen large breed dog food and he does very well on it.  I've heard alot of good things about feeding raw but no way I'd be able to handle the raw meat, bones etc.  :)

Has anyone ever tried Holistic Blend Dog Food?  Bob Weeks (director of sales and marketing) was at the Saint John Home Show and I talked to him for a bit about the food. There are no by products, or crap in the food. No rendered road kill, etc.  Its not in the pet food isle at the Super Store, its in the Natural Food section.  Just wondering if anyone uses it.

I have been using Holistic Blend (Lamb & Rice) for months..I mix it  50/50 with Orijen (Adult, Fish, Regional Red - I mix it up). I also fed Raw, not at the same time though..Beef, Chicken necks/backs, Tripe and raw bones for treats. I also make my own fruit & veggie mix that I serve with the raw. Oh, and the dogs get yogurt daily. I believe in variety and keep them on some kibble for those lazy days or busy times.. My bitch is 2 years old and eats twice daily.

1) Brand of food: Orijen 6 Fish

2) Why that particular brand: Canadian Company; Nutritional value & ingredients; Have tried various other kibbles and raw diet and have found both dogs do best on this as compared to the others; good choice for dog with allergies

3) Age of German Shepherd: Jax (3 1/2) Brodie (10 1/2)

4) Frequency of feeding: 2 times a day (morning and supper), 1 1/2 cups at each feeding for a total of 3 cups/day per dog

Each dog also gets a RMB about 2-3 times per week. Great for keeping the tartar down for dental health.

Also use various supplements added to meals: Glucosamine/Chrondroitin/MSM, Green Lipped Mussel, Salmon Oil, Vit E, Ester C.

I have 3 Shepherds; two are fed pretty much the same:

1.) Brand of food - Acana Grain Free (we rotate between the chicken, lamb and fish varieties)
2.) Why that particular brand - I have a high level of trust / confidence in the company (Champion Pet Foods) and the dogs do well on it
3.) Age of German Shepherd - Male (83 lbs): 9 yrs, Female (63 lbs): 3 yrs
4.) Frequency of feeding (once a day, twice a day, three times a day, etc .....) - 3 times per day (about 1 cup each time) so that they don't have a huge volume to process. They're good eaters and always motivated by food.  ;)

My old girl gets:

1.) Brand of food - 2/3 of her diet is home prepared (raw), using a mix (See Spot Live Longer) plus Carnivora (Urban Carnivore) veggie & fruit mix; the other meal is whatever kibble the other 2 are getting at the time
2.) Why that particular brand - The old girl has a sensitive tummy; can't eat kibble for every meal now. She loves her food, does well on it and it's easy for me.
3.) Age of German Shepherd - 11.5 yrs
4.) Frequency of feeding (once a day, twice a day, three times a day, etc .....) - 3 x per day (2 cups home prepared; 1 cup kibble)
